Giardino Grande, dimora storica
The Giardino Grande is an ancient estate dating back to the second half of the 19th century.
Originally owned by an aristocratic family from the region dedicated to winemaking, it was used as a summer residence.
The Casino (a term used to refer to noble residences located in the countryside of a feudal estate, designed for leisure and relaxation) features rooms with characteristic star-vaulted ceilings, courtyards, terraces, and an ancient votive chapel. Surrounded by a vast Mediterranean garden enriched with a hortus conclusus, pergolas, wells, pathways, temporary ponds, it enjoys a stunning view of the ancient village of Parabita.
The project, led by architects Mauro Lazzari and Marco Lazzari from the Metamor Architetti & Associati studio, focused on the restoration of the Casino and the creation of a new building. The intervention respects the rural character of the pre-existing residence while introducing contemporary elements that emphasize local forms, materials, and craftsmanship.
The furnishings, curated by architect Sara Lagna, combine the Art Déco style—featuring natural materials, floral decorations, and sinuous shapes—with Minimalist design.
Il Giardino Grande è un’antica dimora risalente alla seconda metà dell’800.
Originariamente appartenuta a una famiglia aristocratica del territorio dedita alla vinificazione, veniva utilizzata come residenza estiva. Il Casino (termine usato per indicare le dimore nobiliari ubicate nelle contrade del feudo e dedite allo svago e al relax) è composto da ambienti con le caratteristiche volte a stella, corti, terrazze e da un’antica cappella votiva. Immerso in un ampio giardino mediterraneo, arricchito da un hortus conclusus, pergolati, pozzi, camminamenti, stagni temporanei, gode di una mirabile vista sull’antico borgo di Parabita.
Il progetto, a cura degli architetti Mauro Lazzari e Marco Lazzari dello studio Metamor Architetti & Associati, ha interessato il restauro del Casino e la realizzazione di una nuova costruzione, rispettando il carattere rurale della dimora preesistente e introducendo elementi di contemporaneità che privilegiano forme, materiali e artigianato locali.
L'arredamento, a cura dell’architetta Sara Lagna, coniuga lo stile Art Déco dai materiali naturali, i decori floreali e forme sinuose con il design Minimalista.

Pensata per il “plaisir” degli ospiti che godono del meraviglioso giardino e della piscina, l’architettura nel suo complesso è il risultato di un’equilibrata sintesi fra tradizione e innovazione, comfort e sostenibilità energetica, nel rispetto della cultura mediterranea.
The high openings frame slices of sky to enhance the height of the spaces. The sinuous shapes soften the tones, while the herringbone pattern of the Italian parquet adds a sense of movement.
Le aperture in alto incorniciano spicchi di cielo per valorizzare l’altezza degli ambienti.
La sinuosità delle forme ammorbidisce i toni e la posa del parquet a spina italiana crea movimento.
Dry-stone and local carparo stone walls define more intimate and secluded spaces, such as the outdoor breakfast area (hortus conclusus) and the large internal courtyard, both paved with local Soleto stone.
Le murature in pietra a secco e in pietra locale di carparo delimitano spazi più intimi e raccolti, come la zona colazioni esterna (hortus conclusus) e la grande corte interna, pavimentate con basolato in pietra locale di Soleto.
The lime-plastered walls, bathed in sunlight, create a warm, enveloping atmosphere that is beautifully mirrored in the evening through a perfect blend of contemporary and decorative lighting. These include lamps designed by Renzo Serafini and vintage pieces with brass and marble details, carefully restored to add charm.
Le pareti intonacate a calce, illuminate dai raggi del sole, creano un’atmosfera calda e avvolgente che di sera è replicata grazie a un perfetto mix di luci contemporanee e decorative, come le lampade disegnate da Renzo Serafini o quelle vintage recuperate, dai dettagli in ottone e marmo.
The interior continues the theme of materiality and minimalism; a spacious hall acts as a link between the garden and the inner courtyard. Here, comfortable seating, antique books displayed on a Mid-Century credenza adorned with floral graphics by artist DEM, and a sinuous white sofa reminiscent of Vladimir Kagan's curved designs, offer visitors an opportunity for contemplation and relaxation.
All’interno prosegue il fil rouge di matericità e minimalismo; una grande sala funge da connettivo tra il giardino e la corte interna, dove comode sedute, antichi libri esposti su una credenza Mid-Century decorata dalle grafiche floreali dell’artista DEM e un sinuoso divano bianco che ricorda le curve del design di Vladimir Kagan, offrono agli ospiti un’occasione di contemplazione e relax.
The niche mirrors the door frames and conceals the cooling equipment and various system components. A small fireplace, where children gather to read stories, is clad in Moleanos marble and includes a compartment for storing firewood.
La nicchia riprende le cornici delle porte e al suo interno si nascondono i macchinari per il raffrescamento e vari componenti impiantistici.
Un piccolo camino dove i bambini si ritrovano per leggere le favole, rivestito in marmo Moleanos, ha un vano per riporre la legna.
On the ground floor, after passing through a series of rooms, you reach the small private chapel with star-vaulted ceilings, where the Greek rite altar in pietra leccese has been restored. Here, an oval marble table and two Art Déco armchairs provide a setting for moments of intimate conviviality.
Al piano terra, dopo una successione di stanze, si raggiunge la piccola cappella privata con volte a stella dove è stato restaurato l’altare di rito greco in pietra leccese. Qui un tavolo ovale in marmo e due poltroncine Art Déco offrono momenti di intima convivialità.
The floors were made of cocciopesto, following the construction techniques of the time, and the existing vaulted ceilings were restored. In a room that initially had a collapsed roof, the original pitched roof was rebuilt with wooden beams, reed cladding, and terracotta tiles.
I pavimenti sono stati realizzati in cocciopesto, secondo la tecnica costruttiva dell’epoca, le volte esistenti sono state recuperate.
In una stanza che all’inizio dell’intervento presentava il tetto divelto è stata ricostruita l’originaria copertura a falda con travi in legno, rivestimento in cannucciato ed embrici di terracotta.
In the bedrooms, all the furnishings are unique and customized pieces: antique wrought-iron headboards adorned with exquisite floral designs, carefully restored; custom-designed wardrobes with shapes and colors integrated with the style of the residence; small desks and armchairs upholstered in fabrics that reflect the colors of the surrounding landscape. Finally, lamps designed by Renzo Serafini illuminate the vaulted ceilings of each room.
Nelle camere da letto tutti gli arredi sono pezzi unici e personalizzati; antiche testiere in ferro battuto decorate con preziosi disegni floreali accuratamente restaurate, armadi progettati su misura con forme e colori integrati allo stile della dimora, piccoli scrittoi e poltroncine con tessuti che richiamano i colori del paesaggio circostante. Infine le lampade disegnate da Renzo Serafini illuminano le volte di ciascun ambiente.
Guests of the residence can enjoy moments of outdoor relaxation on the private terraces connected to the bedrooms. Here, benches adorned with floral-patterned cementine tiles and vintage-style rattan seating provide opportunities for contemplation and rest.
Gli ospiti della dimora possono trascorrere momenti di relax all’aperto nelle terrazze private collegate alle camere da letto, dove panche rivestite in cementine dai decori floreali e sedute in rattan in stile vintage offrono occasioni di contemplazione e riposo.
The bathrooms are equipped with everything needed for a beauty routine and relaxation. In the FICO room, the spacious ivory-colored bathroom stands out for the presence of a modern bathtub by Antonio Lupi, positioned in front of a large window that offers a view of the majestic tree from which the room takes its name.
Nei bagni è presente tutto ciò che occorre per la beauty routine e il relax; nella camera FICO, l’ampia sala bagno in color avorio si distingue per la presenza di una moderna vasca Antonio Lupi posizionata di fronte all’ampia finestra da cui si ammira il maestoso albero da cui prende il nome la camera.
The residence features six bedrooms, including one suite. Each room is named after a tree from the Mediterranean garden, and each entrance door is distinguished by a specific shade of green, with a leaf-shaped handle made of iron by local craftsmen, corresponding to the tree the room is named after.
La dimora è dotata di sei camere da letto, di cui una suite; ciascuna camera ha il nome di un albero del giardino mediterraneo e ciascuna porta di ingresso è contraddistinta da uno specifico tono di verde e da una maniglia a forma di foglia dell’albero di cui porta il nome realizzata in ferro dagli artigiani del posto.
